Erin Haynes

Erin Haynes joined SLTI in the spring of 2010 to head the development of oral Native American language assessments and English language reading assessments for the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). This project seeks to provide access to linguistically and culturally appropriate testing materials to the hundreds of Native American tribes that reside in the United States.

Prior to SLTI, Erin worked as a consultant for the Center for Applied Linguistics, where she collaborated on a number of projects pertaining to heritage language learning and to English language learning.

One of these projects was a comprehensive review of Maryland’s English language proficiency standards. Erin has also served as a volunteer English language tutor for speakers of Spanish and Tibetan.

Erin received her PhD in Theoretical Linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley. She specializes in endangered language revitalization and acquisition, especially as it pertains to Native American languages. She has published a book chapter and several articles on this topic. Erin is currently learning the endangered language of her own heritage, Irish Gaelic.
